The breeze blew soft, warm and fragrant, wafting the ocean waves bringing them to lap gently on the sandy shore. Helios was low in the sky casting long shadows on the sepia tinged earth as he ended his journey. In the shallow blue-green water, nymphs frolicked while a goddess bathed. She swam effortlessly, her pale beauty enchanting every sentient being within her scope dazzling them so that they had no other choice than to stand silent, watching her in awe. Her gaze was drawn to the violet sky with her last stroke. Her brother had done his job for the day as she could see in the dimming sky. It was almost time to go to work. She took a few more strokes in the crystalline water and walked onto shore letting the muted sunlight shine off of her pale skin. Her women dressed her in her radiant gown of moonbeams and shimmering starlight as they fixed her flowing silvery tresses. And last the silver crown, glowing so strongly that everything around her was bathed in a white light. It was the same night after night, millennia after the last. The same ritual again and again. Helios waved a farewell in the form of glowing beams of golden light streaking brilliantly from the horizon, waving then retreating into the sea. She smiled gently and extended her silvery beams waving them into the growing darkness. Her chariot awaited her on the sand, gleaming and shimmering in her radiance. Her horses nickered and whinnied softly, anticipating the coming ride. She stroked them, running her slender fingers through their pale manes. She stepped into her transport and whipped the incandescent reins. Immediately the animals took flight and she followed the same time worn path as her brother. Her steeds pulled her higher and higher as her hair and gown seemed to want to stay behind, wanted to stay on the earth. The light glowing iridescent from them flowed behind trying to return to the ground. The Aurai joined her tonight, breathing their soft wind as they flew along side. Their gentle kisses to the air producing downy clouds that seemed to cling to them as they swiftly moved past. She enjoyed their company until she rose too high for them to follow. The ascent was exhilarating, the air grew chilly and the world miniaturized, as she got higher. Her gaze was drawn to the high mountains and the rolling emerald coloured hills. The horses were lathering at the bit as they reached the apogee of the route. But from here she knew it would be easier for them. She rested them for a moment looking down at the blues and greens of the earth and wondering if she had ever seen anything more beautiful. She stretched her arms and smiled down letting her radiance light up the velvet darkness. Then something caught her eye. Curious she drifted a little lower. In the night she rarely saw human beings. They were usually in bed dreaming whatever the brothers Morpheus, Phobetor and Phantasos concocted for them to see. This one was not only outside but he was moving around. Delighted at the novelty and for the break in her mundane routine, she drifted even lower, interested in what he was to do. ---- He wandered the grassy hill making sure his herd was safe from predators. Gathering the smaller ones closer to him, he sat down for a moment and turned his dark head to gaze up at the sky. He stared in wonderment at the beautiful silver orb of light that hung suspended there. The radiance it produced lit up the countryside around him like it was shining just for him. Captivated by the magnificence he lay in the grass to watch it. He had heard the tales of the gods and their incredible abilities both benevolent and otherwise. The goddess of the moon was compassionate, she must have been. Surely the other could not wield such beauty. He continued to stare with wide eyes. He could swear that she had stopped just above him drifting lower than he had ever seen before. Entranced, he settled on the grass to watch her pass to the soft bleating of his sheep. ---- She gazed at him. He was the first human she'd ever really had a look at. The stories she had heard described them as curious creatures that looked as the gods did but with none of the powers. Living without her abilities was unfathomable. How did they survive? He stood staring at her still and she found herself staring at his eyes. They were a dazzling blue yet so dark they almost rivalled the night sky. She could see the way that he was watching her and pleasure at having so engrossed him bolstered her pride. She glided lower wanting to see more of him. Drifting above, she watched him grow tired and fall asleep. Free to admire him further, she let her eyes have free rein. His skin was smooth and young, something she noticed as she admired his well-toned physique. He had taken his shirt off and used it as a pillow in the warm night. Delighting in the way that her radiance caused his skin to resemble smooth marble. He was utterly striking. His hair was darker than the night and fell over his serious looking brow. His face was strong and his features well formed. His beauty rivalled that of Apollo himself. And while staring at him the strangest sensations came over her. Her fingers itched to touch and explore the hard planes and angles of him. Her lips ached to be pressed against his full ones. She wanted to feel their breath mingle and wondered what it would feel like to have his skin pressed against hers. She extended her moonbeams, caressing the tempting skin with its delicate tendrils. He stirred a little at her touch but settled back into the dream world, nestling himself in the lush grass as she continued to explore. Touching his silky hair, she moved lower to touch the stern set of his brows and wondered what vexed him. Then to follow the line of his nose, his soft lips enticed her, beckoning her to kiss him. Looking around, she didn't see anyone. Smiling softly at the sleeping mortal she leaned down and kissed him gently on the lips. ---- He opened his eyes and looked up in shock and delight at the glowing body of light before him. Through the radiance he could see her, Selene, Goddess of the moon. And she had just kissed him! He could see she was embarrassed at having been caught and before she could flee, he grasped her pale hand and held her to him. Wanting to see her face and to touch it with his own hands. He was incredulous with the knowledge that she had come down to him. She had ignored her job and was down on earth when she should have been high in the sky sharing her light with all. Instead she was here shining just for him and he was humbled. They lay on the grass for an eternity before she had to continue on her nightly trek. But not before granting her love his wish to sleep eternally so that she could visit him for all time. ---- Serena closed the book and sighed. How romantic! If only she could find her soul mate like Endymion and Selene found each other. She ran her fingers through her long pale hair and started piecing her dream man together. Her imagination was working over time with thoughts about him. He would be tall and handsome. Romantic and caring, but strong enough to handle her occasional fits of klutziness. Daydreaming fitfully, Serena took a look at her watch and realized that she was late yet again. The girls would be unimpressed with this display of irresponsibility no doubt. She grabbed her things off of the library table and ran out of the silent halls with incredible speed. "I can't be late again! It'll be the second time in two days!" Hoping that she grabbed everything, she threw her coat on and ran out through the doors and into the crowded sidewalk. Dodging people left and right she took another look at her watch. She'd make it in time if she really ran for it. With hope welling up in her heart, Serena ran even faster. She couldn't believe that she had gotten so carried away with reading that myth that she'd lost track of the time. But it really was a great story. Images from the myth flew through her mind but this time she was in place of the goddess. She was the one looking into the eyes of the beautiful Shepard, touching his perfect skin Serena rebounded off an unbelievable solid chest that suddenly appeared in her path. She got a heavenly whiff of cologne before bouncing off and hitting the hard cement. Dazed, Serena struggled against the urge to start crying. She wasn't really hurt but she was startled. And being as emotional as she was, Serena could feel a tear roll down her cheek. "Are you alright?" The soothing voice asked. She could feel someone take a gentle hold of her hand and pull her up to her feet. "I'm ok. I" Serena wiped at her tears and look up at the amazing blue eyes, the shock of jet-black hair and the dazzling smile. The zap of excitement shot through her. She returned his grin with one of her own. "I'm doing really good, now." ---- =^_^= Couldn't you just kill me? LOL Anyways, that's my version of how Selene met Endymion and how Serena met Darien. Hope you liked it! Greek Mythology 101 Selene - Goddess of the Moon. Extremely beautiful, she fell in love with Endymion and together they had fifty daughters. Endymion - There are many different variations on who Endymion was. Some say he was the King of Elis and others claim he was Carian. I went with the Shepard idea. The one thing they agree on is that Selene seduced him. He was granted eternal sleep so that he could preserve his youth and be visited by the goddess forever. The Aurai They were the personification of the breezes. Beautiful and young they were able to fly without wings by using their garments but had to stay low to the ground. Morpheus, Phobetor and Phantasos The brothers of dream. Ovid suggests that Morpheus only sends images of humans in dreams or visions, while his brothers Phobetor and Phantasos are in charge of depicting dream images of animals and inanimate objects. Helios God of the Sun, Selene's brother. Rides along the sky in his sun chariot before setting in the sea in the west. Apollo God of the arts, archery, and divination. He represented the height of male attractiveness. |
